The journey to parenthood is a dream for many, yet it can be accompanied by unforeseen challenges. If you've found yourself asking, "Why can't I get pregnant?" know that you're not alone. This query is more common than you might think, and seeking answers is the first step towards understanding and resolving fertility hurdles. In the UK 1 in 7 couples are experiencing fertility issues and according to The WHO, 1 in 6 people globally are affected by infertility.

In this blog post, we'll delve into some of the common reasons that can contribute to difficulties in achieving pregnancy and also explore the intricate interplay between nutrition and fertility. As a fertility nutritionist, my goal is to empower you with knowledge and strategies that can help optimise your reproductive health.

Understanding the Complex Landscape of Fertility:

Fertility is influenced by a myriad of factors, ranging from physiological to lifestyle-related. These components collectively contribute to the delicate balance required for conception. What I often say to my clients is having a baby is a whole body event. We are so used to focusing on just the reproductive system but we need to remember that all our body systems are linked.

 
  1. Unraveling the Role of Nutrition:

Nutrition forms the foundation of our overall health, and its impact on fertility is profound. Consuming a well-balanced diet rich in essential nutrients can enhance reproductive function and increase the likelihood of successful conception. 2. Timing and Ovulation:

Understanding your menstrual cycle and pinpointing ovulation is crucial. Irregular menstrual cycles or unpredictable ovulation can significantly impact the timing of intercourse, reducing the chances of sperm meeting the egg. Get to know your cycle. Ovulation predictor test kits are useful and there are some apps out there which are specifically for tracking your cycle. However, caveat - I wouldn’t solely rely on these. These are best used in conjunction with paying attention to your body signs. For example, the consistency of your cervical mucus changes throughout your cycle and will turn more like an ‘egg white consistency’ on the lead up to ovulation. Also BBT charting is an excellent way to find out when you ovulate. Once your egg is released, your body produces the hormone Progesterone, which is a heat inducing hormone and this is what is detected when you monitor your Basal Body Temperature. 3. Age and Fertility:

Age plays a pivotal role in fertility. As you age, both egg quality and quantity decline. We cannot ignore the natural aging process, however, you most definitely can improve your egg quality through diet and lifestyle strategies. 4. Optimising Lifestyle Choices:

Maintaining a healthy body weight is essential for fertility. Excessive weight gain or loss can disrupt hormonal balance, affecting ovulation and conception. Incorporating regular physical activity and stress management techniques can further support your fertility journey.


5. Fertility-Boosting Nutrients:

Certain nutrients play a significant role in reproductive health. From folate and iron to omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, these nutrients contribute to hormonal balance, egg quality, and overall fertility.

6. Addressing Underlying Conditions:

Conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, and thyroid disorders can hinder fertility. Customised nutritional strategies tailored to your specific condition can improve your chances of conception. 

7. Male Factor:

Fertility isn't solely a female concern. Supporting male fertility through proper nutrition can contribute to successful pregnancy outcomes. Almost 50% of fertility issues are male factor whether that be down to low sperm count, poor sperm motility abnromal sperm shape to other underlying health conditions and lifestyule factors. 8. Stress and Emotional Well-Being:

Chronic stress can affect hormonal regulation and interfere with the ovulation process. Incorporating stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, or counseling can positively impact fertility.

9. Fallopian Tube Issues:

Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can prevent the egg from meeting the sperm, resulting in infertility. These issues can stem from conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis.

10. Uterine Abnormalities:

Anomalies in the uterus, such as fibroids or polyps, can affect the implantation of a fertilized egg. Identifying and addressing these issues can improve the chances of successful pregnancy.

11. Unexplained Infertility:

In some cases, despite thorough testing, you may get the diagnosis of unexplained infertility. This can be frustrating. I don’t subscribe to the diagnosis of unexplained infertility. There is always a reason for something and I firmly believe that ‘unexplained infertility’ is ‘uninvestigated infertility’. This is where working with a fertility nutritionist can help. I do not just focus on diet. I take a functional medicine approach which means investigating the root cause of fertility issues looking at every system of the body in addition to lifestyle and diet strategies.
